A vital part of food safety is ensuring that retail packaging and food storage does not pose a health risk. That’s why the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) carefully oversees the types of food and storage packaging that is allowed in grocery stores and other marketplaces. At Laszeray Technology, we have years of experience with manufacturing food containers and food packaging, from plastic water bottles to salad dressing containers, from many types of plastics commonly used in the industry, including polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE).
What Is Food Grade Plastic?
“Food grade” is often confused with “food safe,” a related but distinct descriptor. Although the two terms are sometimes used interchangeably, it is useful to understand the differences.
- Food grade – These materials are considered safe for processing or storing edibles. All components of a food container must comply with this standard in order to qualify as food grade. Food grade plastics include polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene (PP), and high-density polyethylene.
- Food safe – These are materials that, so long as they are used properly, can come into contact with food without tainting it or producing another safety hazard.
Laszeray is well versed in the manufacturing and engineering of food grade and food safe plastic resin products.
About Food Grade Plastic Injection Molding
Injection molding is a manufacturing process that has been proven to be highly adept at creating a wide array of food packaging and containers. It works with nearly any type of plastic resin. The process essentially involves creating a metal mold, injecting molten material into it, and then allowing the injected material to cool and harden.
The advantages of plastic injection molding for food storage containers are many. It can create even highly complicated designs that would be impractical with conventional assembly methods. Whether you need a large volume of materials or a relatively small amount, the process can easily accommodate your requirements.
Plastic injection molding is commonly used to create storage packaging made from high-density polyethylene (recycling number 2), a strong, inexpensive, and easily recyclable FDA-approved material with high chemical resistance. HDPE is often used to make containers for beverages and food that is stored cold. Another common option is polypropylene (recycling number 5), which has a high melting point and is especially suitable for creating microwave-safe containers.
If your company is undecided about the type of plastic or design that would be ideal for your food packaging or food containers, you can rely on Laszeray to provide expert guidance that draws upon our decades of industry experience.
